Italy presents from North to South a great variety of events related to the celebration of Carnival, that attract tourists from all over the world.
The features of Carnival celebration refer to ancient traditional festivities, such as the Great Greek Dionysian celebrations or the Roman Saturnalia, when people used to free themselves from social obligations and hierarchies and enjoy themselves in a situation of temporal subversion of social order, overindulging in masking and revelries.
Here is a list of some of the most interesting events related to the celebration of Carnival in Italy from North to South.
The Carnival of Venice is perhaps the most famous in the world after the one in Rio de Janeiro. This year, from February 4th to 21st, life in Venice becomes a theatre performance among wings, angels and other flying objects .. love and madness!

The Ambrosian Carnival will be held in Milan from February 23rd to 25th, 2012. Masks, parades, floats, chiacchiere and tortelli will enliven the entire city centre.

The Carnival of Ivrea, in the Province of Turin, will be held from February 18th to 21st, 2012. Folklore and parades will reach their climax in the famous so-called”Battle of the Oranges”.

The European Carnival will be held in Cento, in the Province of Ferrara, from February 5th to March 4th, 2012. In an atmosphere of cheerfulness, transgression and fun, street artists and comic-folk groups will also parade along the main streets, coming from all over Italy and from different parts of the world.

The Carnival of Viareggio is a real institution and it is prepared several months in advance. The magic of this Carnival will be back this year in February every Sunday and on the first Sunday of March, with floats’ parades and much more.

Castrovillari, in the Province of Cosenza, has long been considered the capital of Carnival in Calabria. It will be held from February 12th to 21st, 2012. This year again, the Carnival will host the International Festival of Folklore.

The Carnival of Acireale, in the Province of Catania, will be held from February 4th to 5th and from 15th to 21st, 2012. The slogan is the following: “the most beautiful Carnival in Sicily”, characterised by the parade of illuminated and flowered floats parading along the main streets of the city.

In Mamoiada, in the province of Nuoro, it is possible to experience the real Sardinian folklore. From February 19th to 21st, 2012, the traditional masks from Sardinia. the Mamuthones and the Issohadores, go on stage.
