1. Where can I get highways traffic information ?

Autostrade per l’Italia web site provides updated and detailled traffic information along highways. Also, one can call The toll free number 840.04.21.21, 24 hours a day or the Infoviaggio number 892525.

2. What’s the speed limit for highways here in Italy ?

Speed limits : on highways 130 km/h , on larger roads 110km/h , on smaller roads90 km/h, inside cities 50km/h ( sometimes 70km/h only when clearly pointed out) .

3. What’s a “tutor”?

It’s a speed limit control system connected to local camera positioned along highways that allows to detect average speed limits . This is system is managed and controlled by Local Police ( Polizia stradale) . This system can detect when a car is exceeding a speed limit by making an average calculation of a car speed while travelling between 10 and 25 km , and registering violation into the appropriate database . The driver driver will then receive the ticket at home. This system replaces agent posting.

4. What’s a “ZTL”?

“ZTL” stands for ZONA TRAFFICO LIMITATO ( which means Limited Traffic Area), enabled in the down town areas of major Italian cities ( such as Rome, Tourin, Verona, Milan) in order to protect historical and archaeological heritage, to safeguard citizens ‘quality of life and decreasing city pollution . Only authorized vehicles can access ZTL areas in respect of set entry hours. More info on ZTL areas are available on cities official websites.

5. How can I recognize touristic signals ?

Touristic signals have a brown backgrounds and white writings.
